Cole paints urban and pastoral landscapes in a quick gestural semi-abstract style. The paintings often have flaring fluorescent grounds overpainted with oils to give a lively surface; investing the subject of English Romantic Landscape Painting with a snazzy, fresh approach. Cole works in series and the paintings often suggest a journey as she researches the image, taking hundreds of photos from buses, trains and on foot. Sometimes the train or vehicle window frame is placed in the painting to highlight how many of us experience landscape. Inspired by American photographer Ed Ruscha, Cole infuses the banality of the car park with the same beauty as a rolling hill. Cole’s work is held in Public and Private Collections including The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Arts Council England East, and The Regional Assembly Brussels. She exhibits nationally and internationally.
